It inhabits the central </font><a title="Indo-Pacific" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Pacific"><font size="3">Indo-West Pacific</font></a><font size="3"> region. These crabs will congregate on </font><a title="Mud flat" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mud_flat"><font size="3">mud flats</font></a><font size="3"> or </font><a title="Beach" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach"><font size="3">beaches</font></a><font size="3"> in groups of a few thousand, and filter sand or mud for microscopic organisms.
