Western honey bee
<font size="3">The <b>Western honey bee</b> or <b>European honey bee</b> (<i>Apis mellifera</i>) is a species of </font><a title="Honey bee" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_bee"><font size="3">honey bee</font></a><font size="3"> comprised of several subspecies or races. "Mellifera" is from the Greek, and means honey-carrying (<i>meli</i>, honey and <i>fero</i>, carry) - hence "Apis mellifera" is the honey-carrying bee. The name was coined in 1758 by </font><a title="Carolus Linnaeus" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolus_Linnaeus"><font size="3">Carolus Linnaeus</font></a><font size="3">, though in a subsequent 1761 publication, he referred to it as <i>mellifica</i>; the older name has precedence, but some people still utilize the incorrect subsequent spelling.
